Last weekend we went to the stone circle or "henge" at Avebury. It is huge - it actually surrounds the village of Avebury. Unlike Stonehenge, you can walk up to the stones and touch them and walk around the circle. It is incredible. The stones are huge and they are just standing there in the middle of a field - I can't even describe how cool it is. The kids thought it was great mostly because there were sheep grazing around the stones too... We also visited the church in the town - it is so old that the notation said that the aisles inside were added in the 12th century! It was closed due to vandalism (something that is not limited to the US I guess) so we'll have to go back so we can go inside - I am very curious about what it looks like on the inside!
If you look closely you can see the circle of stones curve around to the left of the picture - the marker that Aidan is standing in front of marks where a stone was that was chopped up in the 12th century when the villagers tried to get rid of the stones due to religious fervor...
You are not supposed to climb on the stones - but he was already up there - so I took a picture...
Some of the stones are enormous!
