Planting Bulbs

I decided that yesterday would be a good day to plant some daffodils and crocuses (crocii?) in our front garden so we went to Home Depot and got all the stuff. We got home and started to try to dig some holes for the bulbs. Unfortunately under the innocent looking mulch is rock solid clay. I managed to get the holes dug and the bulbs planted but it wasn't as fun as I'd hoped because the kids couldn't dig at all - it might as well have been solid rock! They did enjoy putting the bulbs in the holes and piling chunks of clay back on top of them.
Hopefully we'll have some flowers in the spring but I won't be surprised if they can't grow in the clay.
Aoife had fun picking up the bulbs I had arranged in the garden and putting them back into the bag.

If they don't grow, you may want to remove some of the clay and mix some potting soil in there, but I hope you are pleasantly surprised in the spring. Bulbs seem to love Miracle Grow... have always had good luck with mine using it.

I know - I should have checked first but didn't even think it would be all clay. I'm going to do a big clay removal/soil replacement in the other parts of the garden before we plant more bulbs! Also thinking of doing some planters.
